Birdy is back with her first album of new songs in five years, so it’s safe to say that there are high expectations for this release. Her previous album, Fire Within, was released in 2012 on the independent label Atlantic Records UK. The first single off the new album is called “Wild Horses” and it was released on November 13th through all digital retailers. It starts out with a fast-paced drumbeat, only to be joined by piano chords played by Birdy herself. You can almost feel the earth shaking as she delivers lyrics of love despite everything being lost. It is an extremely powerful song that can almost make you feel like you are suspended in the air. The song then slows down, but maintains the same intensity that was felt in the beginning. It has an acoustic sound to it, which helps showcase Birdy’s voice. There is a sense of urgency in the next verse as Birdy sings about wanting to feel something (Wild Horses). Birdy’s breath control and placement is flawless here, as she holds notes for long periods of time, including several instances where she holds a word for over half a second. This gives her voice great emotional impact because you can tell there is an underlying feeling that must be conveyed through her vocals before moving on to the next line. The song takes an acoustic turn but still maintains the same intensity. Once again, this is due to Birdy’s phenomenal performance. She ties together these different verses seamlessly and manages to combine them into one cohesive song. As she sings the chorus, her voice has a very soft sound to it, which allows for her powerful lyrics to be heard clearly. Like on the previous songs, there are several instances where she holds notes for half a second or more (Wild Horses). Birdy then sings about wanting to be heard (I want you not only hear me sing), followed by talking about how people will say no (But they're all afraid) before throwing in some optimism (Will light the way). Once again, Birdy’s breath control and placement is flawless. She is able to maintain the same intensity without singling out certain lyrics. There are several instances of this throughout the song. The song then slows down once more to an acoustic sound accompanied by Birdy’s soft voice (Must give in). This is where the album starts to build up again. It is slow in tempo, but maintains the same intensity that was felt in the beginning (Wild Horses). Once again, Birdy does an impressive job holding notes. The verses are lead by her voice, while when she hits the chorus, her voice is joined by a piano (Wild Horses) with some light behind it (dancing with you). This song too is an acoustic song, which allows for Birdy to display her breath control, placement and her voice. She uses the same pattern of holding notes for half a second or more (I want you not only hear me sing). This time though she takes it to an even higher level. Not only does she hold longer notes, but she also sings in different pitches (I want you only see me sing), while she holds that note for a slightly longer period of time. The song then slows down once more into an acoustic sound (Wild Horses). Once again, there are several instances of Birdy singing in different pitches (I want you not only hear me sing). 8eeb4e9f32 49
